Castlebar's Educate Together school has seen a rise in queries and interest from parents looking to send their children to the school in recent weeks, since the most recent controversy over the location of the new school erupted. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday (Thursday), Jarlath Munnelly, the regional development officer for Educate Together, told us: "We have a location and there is refurbishment work going on and we're happy for Wednesday August 31, that it will be ready to go, we are still getting queries from parents and had some recent enrolments this week and we are looking solidly like 10 or 11 children starting in the school next week."

THE elected members of Mayo County Council this week said they want to see no more losses of Blue Flag beaches next year after Ross beach in Killala lost it's Blue Flag when this years Blue Flags were announced earlier this year.

The Killala Chamber and Development Association is deeply disappointed that Ross Beach did not retain its very valuable Blue Flag, which is an internationally recognised symbol of excellence regarding bathing water and other relevant facilities. In a statement this week they said, "We understand that this was not due to any deterioration of the quality of the water, its sewerage facility or clearly displayed information. Ross Beach with its Blue Flag status was a huge tourist attraction for the area and large crowds visit the beach during the summer. Mayo County Council has over the years carried out excellent improvement works providing enhanced parking and other facilities." The chairman of the group, Tony McGarry, appealed to Mayo County Council to urgently take the necessary steps to ensure that Ross Beach will have its Blue Flag reinstated immediately.

Mayo will take in 86 Syrian refugees this year, the members of Mayo County Council were informed this week. Síofra Kilcullen who is the chair of the newly established Mayo Interagency Resettlement Committee told the elected members of the plans. She told the meeting that Mayo is one of eight counties across the country which will be taking part in the resettlement programme.

The organisational structure of the senior management of Mayo County Council was raised once again this week by the elected members of the council at their April meeting. Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly questioned what would happen once the current director of services, Paddy Mahon, left the organisation to take up the role as the chief executive of Longford County Council in the near future. Cllr Munnelly said he hoped that each of the four municipal districts would retain a director of services over each area. This view was backed up by councillors of every political hue in the chamber, with Independent councillor Seamus Weir proposing a motion that each municipal district retain a director of services, which was seconded by Cllr Frank Durcan.

A Fine Gael county councillor has called for a special heading to be included in the next roadworks scheme for Mayo to deal with road works and improvements on the Wild Atlantic Way in the county.

The chief executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, said he was "very happy" with the return the council got from its spending on hospitality on council credit cards. The issue was raised by Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly on Monday, during a discussion on the Local Goverment Audit Services Statutory Audit Report for 2014. Cllr Munnelly pointed out an item in the report compiled by Hugh Neville, an auditor with the Department of the Environment and Local Government, that read: "Expenses paid through credit cards for senior management, including a sample of invoices processed through the expenditure system for hospitality were examined by me in the course of the 2014 audit. While improvements continue to be made, the information supplied in some cases was not detailed enough. Given the poor state of the finances of the council, the level of hospitality and related expenses currently incurred by the council should be capped."
